African American Teaching Fellows: Application 2024

INTRODUCTION

We are looking for African American aspiring educators who are:

Students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate education degree program, and about to enter the final year of that program, OR
Recent graduates who are planning to enroll in a graduate education degree program, OR
Individuals currently working in education, seeking to become a licensed teacher, including people working with provisional licensure or teaching assistants who wish to become teachers.
All applicants should be currently enrolled in courses leading towards licensure or have been admitted into a Virginia-approved program awarding licensure.

The qualifications for becoming a Teaching Fellow are stringent. Our committee – a group of local educators and AATF board members – are looking for applicants who are academically competent, are willing to work with other fellows and with mentors, are interested in living and teaching in the Charlottesville/Albemarle area, and are enthusiastic about education. Preference may be given to people seeking endorsement in the areas most critical to the needs of local school systems, but all k-12 areas of endorsement will be considered.

Fellowships include financial support towards licensure from $1,800/semester for part-time students to $3,000/semester for full-time students.

ABOUT THE SPONSOR

AATF puts relationships first. Our Fellows learn about students as individuals and become members of the community in which their students are growing up. This allows Fellows to address students in context and make learning relevant to their lives. Students not only learn the material covered on standardized tests but they also use this knowledge to explore and improve themselves and the world around them. In this way, education extends beyond the classroom. In Charlottesville and Albemarle County, African American Teaching Fellows not only promote diversity in action but they also serve school communities, develop new leaders, and improve the quality of life for everyone.
